walking, sweeping, crying

acts for sensing and processing place

walking, sweeping, crying is a self-curated solo exhibition by Denise Lee about finding one’s way through the navigation of place. The pieces span the last four to five years (2019-2023) and include spatial interventions, short films, and sound art, including several collaborations.

Aside from the common thread of perceiving and understanding one’s surroundings and thus one’s place within them, many of the works explore feelings of alienation, encountering the unknown, estrangement, loneliness, homesickness, and the making of belonging.

As many of the pieces were created during, in spite of, and sometimes because of the pandemic, this exhibition has been an opportunity to bring them together thematically and debut many of the works in a physical space. It is my hope that viewers, listeners and participants can find resonance and companionship to their own paths through the blended stories in this exhibition.

Special thanks to the Make-up project space and Maria Paula Maldonado.
